Artist Statement 

Mathias Dowers does not see different mediums as limitations, but rather, an opportunity to widen his scope and express himself by using art as an extension of his voice.

Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada to parents who migrated from Trinidad & Tobago, Dowers is an Industrial Designer studying at OCAD university. He designs and crafts artwork that functions as furniture and is currently working with wood and metal. His work often playfully amplifies Juxtapositions and experiments with balance and metaphor.

Dowers believes that a significant aim of art should be to start conversations that explore and generate narratives connected to innovation. He also believes that the true essence of art is the energy born at that moment and time during the creation of it - evoking feeling, and sparking conversation, even if internally. Funny enough, although Mathias wants his work to start conversation, he doesn’t talk much, and he instead lets his work speak for itself.
